Consultation: Diagnosis vs. Therapy — What's the Difference?

How is an ordinary consultation different from a diagnostic session?

Let's try to understand this together.

In a diagnostic consultation, together with a psychologist, you do the following work:

What is the current situation in your life? What are you experiencing as a problem?

What do you want to arrive at? What outcome? What state?

For many people, a lot already becomes clear and obvious at this stage (and some come to a consultation for exactly that). Let's move on...

What is preventing you from making this shift? We explore this together and find the cause. This is where the diagnostic part ends. Some people thank the psychologist and go on to solve the task on their own, while others continue on into therapy.

For example: “I don't understand why my relationships keep ending badly, over and over — help me understand why.” Or: “I know that eating in the evening isn't healthy, and I want to become slimmer, but evening comes and... help me understand why this keeps happening!”
